Access Independence

Services

Information and Referral

We identify resources, services, and service providers in public, private, and community organizations. Information is provided on accessibility, housing, recreation, transportation, and other organizations dealing with disability issues.

Registries are maintained that provide local options for affordable/accessible housing, personal assistants, and interpreters.

An up-to-date collection of resource material on disability-related issues and services is available to the general public in our office.

Community Advocacy

Activities have influenced positive changes in local, state and federal legislation and the enforcement of existing laws to promote and ensure civil rights of people with disabilities.

Technical Accessibility Assistance

Access Independence offers assistance to businesses, agencies and individuals wishing to make their facilities and/or services more accessible to all consumers. We can make site visits and prepare a written summary with recommendations for the most economical and efficient method to become more accessible.

Community Education and Awareness

Our staff are available upon request to do presentations about disability-related issues and concerns of persons with disabilities.

Representative Payee Program

Access Independence offers a representative payee program where individuals can be assisted to have a more productive and independent life, provide them with money management skills training and enable them to possibly manage their own finances.

Direct services for people with disabilities are provided free of charge and include the following:

Peer Counseling

Through counseling, participants learn about the needs and resources necessary for independent living. Participants set goals and actively pursue steps to achieve their goals. Peer counseling takes place individually or in a group setting.

Independent Living Skills Training

Based on the needs of participants, programs are designed to teach individuals with disabilities the skills necessary for acquiring, maintaining, or increasing their independence.
Individual and group training is provided in several categories.  All programs are designed to meet individual needs.

Support Groups

Support groups are organized for individuals with disabilities who share common concerns. Leaders understand the group process and share the concern of their particular group.

Individual Advocacy

Staff members assist individuals with disabilities to understand and exercise their civil rights regarding employment, housing, transportation, accessibility, and other needed services. Staff members intervene with individuals, groups, agencies, organizations, and systems on issues related to an individual’s rights and needs.
